The title’s somewhat misleading in Special Victims Unit, for it’s not the victims that are special but the perps—grade-A sleazebags whose vile acts test the restrictions of network primetime portrayals of crime and punishment. The quality writing and overall professionalism one expects from a Law & Order franchise are still evident, and that’s been reason enough for otherwise well-adjusted viewers to follow detectives Stabler and Benson down some very twisted paths. Universal has opted for a haphazard release schedule on all its L&O sets, a frustrating practice for those who prefer to watch the seasons in order.

GREAT MOMENTS: Season 1: A taxi driver is murdered in a particularly ghoulish fashion in “Payback”; Season 5: Richard Belzer’s dramatic turn in “Legacy”; Stabler and Benson play Mulder and Scully in “Unusual Suspects.”

FAST-FORWARD: The front-loaded promos on the first disc of each set. Season 3: “Mad Hops” is a misfire.

EXTRAS: Season 1: “Special Victims Unit: The Beginning” featurette; Dann Florek squad-room walk-through; Season 5: “Police Sketch” actor profiles; Premiere Episode: The first episode of the original Law & Order series; “Special Victims Unit: The Beginning” featurette; Dann Florek squad-room walk-through.
